Meath East TD, and Fianna fail education spokesman, Thomas Byrne, has written to Education minister, Joe McHugh to emphasise his belief that McHugh should make a definitive call, sooner rather than later, on whether or not this years Leaving Cert should take place or not.

Sources have speculated that there is some concern that McHugh may be prevaricating on making the call on the assumption he will no longer have the education portfolio in any new administration and the next person in the hot seat can make the call.

However speaking to Meath Live Byrne said he hopes this is not the case.

‘I certainly hope not, a decision needs to be made on this quite quickly it’s in everyone’s interests that this is decided on very soon.

‘I say in my letter that i feel the leaving should not take place this year, I have been consistent in saying this and nothing I have seen or heard has changed my mind on that.’
