One youth was arrested following an outbreak of antisocial behaviour in Ashbourne’s Garden City estate over the weekend.

On Sunday Gardai intervened after reports emerged of a fight between two youths.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed, ‘Gardaí arrested one male youth in the Garden City area of Ashbourne yesterday 31st May 2020, at approximately 9pm, in relation to a public order incident.

‘He was taken to Ashbourne Garda Station and later released. He will now be dealt with by way of the Youth Diversion Programme.’

Fine Gael councillor Alan Tobin referred to the incident on the Ashbourne Notice Board Facebook page, when he posted, ‘Last night I’m delighted to report there was an arrest in Garden city. This followed a number of nights of disturbances affecting residents and people up to enjoy the beautiful sunshine in our wonderful estate. A small number ruining things for everyone else basically.

‘Today I met with my councillor colleagues Conor Tormey & Aisling O’Neill, representatives from the community section of An Garda Siochana and volunteer representatives from the GAA, rugby, Ash Utd and the community centre, we met in a car park and stayed over 2m apart, we discussed some of the anti social behavior of late and formulated a plan of action which will be reviewed in just over two weeks time.

‘There are major concerns over nitrious oxide gas or laughing gas being used by young people . The Gardai ask for ALL incidences to be reported by the public, that information is key to them being able to deploy resources and get this sorted.

Faces cannot be identified in pictures that show a fight in progress and glass bottles being thrown into St. Declan’s primary school. It’s only the start of the summer, we love our town and want to ensure that it remains a wonderful place to raise a family and grow old in.

‘ Gardai,  have been excellent during this Covid crisis. I want to thank them personally for their service over the past number of months.’
