Independent Councillor David Gilroy is the new Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council.

The Athboy-native, who represents the Kells Municipal District, defeated Independent Councillor Joe Bonner, who also contested the position.

Councillor Gilroy, who was first elected to the council in 2014, was proposed and seconded by independent councillors Brian Fitzgerald and Nick Killian respectively.

Fianna Fáil’s Aisling Dempsey from the Trim Municipal District was elected Leas-Chathaoirleach.

Meanwhile, Geraldine Keogan was co-opted onto the council to replace her sister Sharon while Labour’s Elaine McGinty took the seat of her party colleague, Annie Hoey.

The vacancies arose from the election of Sharon Keogan and Annie Hoey to the Seanad.

Due to social distancing requirements, the local authority could not hold its annual general meeting in the traditional council chamber on Railway Street in Navan.

Instead, the meeting took place this afternoon at the Solstice Arts Centre in the town.
