Meath West Aontú TD and Chairperson of the Safer Meath Campaign, Peadar Toibin, has called on newly appointed Minister for Justice to ensure that she lifts Meath from the bottom rung in terms of Garda numbers. He stated;

“Meath has the lowest number of Gardaí per capita in this state. We have less than half the number of Gardaí per capita than other counties.  This has a massive effect on our Gardai’s ability to police the county. It has an effect on the level of anti-social behaviour and crime that is happening here in Meath and also on the ability of the Gardaí to investigate and convict”.

“We know that Meath has experienced a massive increase in drugs crime in recent years and the level of anti-social behaviour as spiked throughout the county.

‘The biggest town in the country without a Garda station, Ratoath is in the Ministers own constituency. Johnstown Navan is another large urban area without the necessary Garda services. Indeed our Garda headquarters has recently been taken out of the county and moved to Mullingar”.

“All of these decisions are now in the hands of Minister McEntee. She can use her time to resolve this crisis for the people who elected her or simply do the bidding of the department. We urge her to listen to the people of Meath in this time if crisis and fix the lack of Gardaí once and for all.”
