Local football is in mourning today after the passing of Paddy (Podge) Newman a long time servant of the game in various capacities.
Perhaps best known as a referee and later a long time assessor with the Meath branch of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, Podge had a unique way of imparting knowledge accumulated over many years as the man in the middle himself.
His comments could be blunt, straight to the point, and at times dogmatic, but when the ref on the receiving end had time to think about them they were inevitably accurate, honest, and importantly never personal.
Probably best described as one of the games characters Podge left an impression on anyone who ever encountered him.
He knew how to referee, he knew how to improve referees and he’ll be missed.
