A young Slane side, promoted from Junior B in the reshuffle  wnt to Rathkenny on Saturday afternoon and outlasted a less fit and seriously indisciplined Cortown crew, who ended the game with fourteen men and were fortunate to escape without a couple more departing early.

Slane more or less wrapped this up in the opening half at the end of which they led by 0-9 to 0-3 with a third of the winners scores arriving from a variety of long range frees from ‘keeper Darren Berrill.

His opposite number. John McFadden, kept Cortown in some form of contention, just before the interval when he reacted superbly to go full length and push away a fiercely hit driver from Podge MCGowan.

The period between the 10th and 30th minute of the opening half was to prove decisive overall as the Blues kicked seven points to the losers two.

One of those white flags would be up there with the score of the season as in the 21st minuted Slane midfielder Jim Marry found himself isolated along the right toucline with a possee of Cortown players about to surround him.

Marry had less support than a woman whose bra straps have just snapped but never panicked and curled a superb shot over with the outside of his boot.

The second half saw Cortown implement a physical policy borne, presumably, out of frustration at the fact that when ever they closed the gap on the scoreboard Slane immediately widened it again.

Referee Pat Clarke had two clear opportunities to dismiss Cortown players for clear striking offences before he did dismiss one for a similar incident ten minutes from time.

In between, but more particularly after the rough stuff some football broke out, and a galvanised Cortown laid late siege to the winners posts without ever really looking like getting the goal they required, although Berrill advanced well to clear one dangerous lob.

Fittingly the Slane player, Matt Tully, who had been the subject of most of the crude Cortown attention kicked the games final score.

Slane; Darren Berrill 0-3, Aaron Lane, Sean Martyn, Liam White, Ru Searle, Eanna Mooney, Eoin Feeley 0-1, Jim Marry 0-1, Peter Martyn, Podge McGowan 0-3, Francis Marry, Matt Tully 0-2, Cillian Gough, Daniel Forde 0-2, Zak Fitzsimons 0-1
