Kilmainhamwood 1-08

St Ultans 1-12

Kilmainhamwood exited this year Junior Football Championship in glorious sunshine in Moynalty, after a very spirited display against a more clinical St Ultans side.

Knowing that nothing but a convincing victory would suffice in this tight 3 team group, The Wood settled into the game with points from Callum Crosbie from play and points from frees by Crosbie and Stephen Kiernan, gave Kilmainhamwood a 3-2 lead after 10 minutes. Further points from David Russell, one from play and one from a free gave Kilmainhamwood a 5-3 lead after 19 mins. However, St Ultans were to kick 6 points without reply to lead 0-9 to 0-5 at half time. Indeed it could have been worse from the Wood, only for a brilliant save from Andy Farrelly on the line to prevent a certain goal.

Stephen Kiernan reduced the deficit to 3 points, but D’Ultans responded with a point of their own. However on 40 mins, the very impressive and speedy wing forward, Jamie Fagan produced a moment of brilliance for the Wood and give them a lifeline. Fagan burst through the Ultans defence and drilled a low shot to the bottom corner to give the audible Ultans keeper no chance.

Niall Bennett who was singled out for ‘special attention’ levelled things up with a long distance free after being hauled down again.

However, just before the water break, mid way through the 2nd half, St Ultans scored a rather bizarre goal after it squeezed inside keepers Alan Carolans near post, after a deflection along the way.

The Wood were never to recover from this blow. They could only muster one further point for the remainder of the 2nd half, this from a Niall Bennett free.

The game had a fiery side to the last 15 mins of play, which seen 3 players given straight red cards. Brian Cassidy received his marching orders after retaliating to a late hit, along with the Ultans full forward. Subsitute, Richy Corbally seemed perplexed to receive his marching orders after grappling with the Ultans full back line.

Kilmainhamwood will feel they might have left this game behind them again, kicking 10 wides as well as kicking balls short, but they showed great spirit to keep in touch with a well organised Ultans Team.

They will feel aggrieved with a few dubious referee decisions, but they can take great courage from the displays of the young lads on display. Brian Cassidy, Jamie Fagan, Callum Crosbie and Niall Conlon really showed they have great years ahead of them in the blue and white shirt.

However, it was the 2 Carolan Brothers, David and Paul, that really stood out again. David again showing no fear and commitment, but it was Paul that really stood out once again.
