Record breaking goalkeeper Gary Rogers was the Dundalk hero as they advanced to the last play off game in their bid to qualify for the Europa League group stages with a penalty shoot out success in Moldova on Thursday night.
The Bohermeen man made a record 48th appearance in a European tie and ensured he’d have something more to celebrate after the match than the fact he was turning 39 a few hours later.
Rogers guessed right and dived left to deny Jan Oblior who was taking FC Sheriff’s second spot kick, and with all other penalties scored Dundalk advanced to face Kiaksvik of the Faroe Islands next Thursday.
That is a home tie for the Lilywhites, but it will take place in Dublin’s Aviva stadium.
Victory in that tie would see the Dundalk men enjoy the possibility of lucrative ties against possible Premier League opposition in Tottenham Hotspur, who they have encountered in previous European adventures, Leicester City or even Scottish giants Celtic.
