Aontu leader, and Meath West TD, Peadar Toibin, has likened the long awaited Navan – Dublin rail link to the long suffering Mayo football team!
He told Meath Live, “The Navan Rail Line is the Mayo Football Team of Meath Politics. Lots of promise, no delivery. Despite three Meath TDs in government the Dublin to Navan Rail Line remains incomplete. With every election for Council or the Dáil in Meath come the promises to get the train. Those promises have remained just that as more and more Meath is plunged into a commuter hell. The 2021 Budget despite its tens of billions in additional spending, and public transport allocation, ignores the people of Meath once again.”
“I have met with the Minister Ryan in the past few weeks to discuss the extension of the rail line and the need for the line in Meath. I have raised it in the Dáil and through Parliamentary Questions. I stressed the benefits to long suffering families, to workers, to commuters and businesses. I have pitched the environmental benefit of this line to the Green Minister.
Yet despite the large number of Government Ministers, TDs and Senators in Meath and the €18bn in spending the Budget was devoid of the Rail line. We, in Aontú, explicitly put the funding for the extension of the Navan Rail Line into our pre-budget submission. The government didn’t. When the Ministers mentioned the public transport element of the budget, the Navan Rail Line was once again left out. The government fails to pay even pay lip service to a Rail Line.”
