The new generation S-Class has arrived in Ireland in standard and long wheelbase versions, writes Brian Byrne.

Designed with what Mercedes calls ‘a high-status grille’, the car features a more contoured body shape.

Two petrol and three diesels are available initially. A plug-in hybrid will follow. All have V8 or 6-cylinder in-line engines and 9-speed automatic transmission.

Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz in Ireland, says demand is expected to focus on the standard wheelbase 350d launching at €121,865. “Beyond that, most models are likely to be bought by special order, fitted with features according to individual preference.”

The car offers more interior space than before, and the boot capacity is 550 litres, a 20L increase.

Up to five screens can be specified for the Mercedes-Benz MBUX interface with 3D display. Eye-tracking can anticipate occupant wishes and interpret body language, head and hand movements to manage functions.
