A local councillor is calling for vehicle registration numbers to be printed on all drive-thru fast-food packaging in an effort to deter illegal dumping.
Fine Gael’s Alan Tobin believes the measure would stop people throwing their take-away rubbish out the window of their vehicle.
It comes after 15 tons of litter were recently cleared from a two kilometre stretch of road on the outskirts of Ashbourne, close to a local restaurant chain.
The motion caused much debate at Meath County Council’s monthly meeting on Monday, with some councillors against the proposal citing data protection concerns.
However, it was eventually decided that the local authority would write to the Environment Minister Eamon Ryan and ask him to consider rolling out the initiative nationwide.
