The East Meath village of Slane has lost one of its legendary characters with the passing of James Smith from St Erc’s Terrace.
Not too many would know him as James though, for some reason he was known as Bertie throughout his life.
From a long established Slane family Bertie ran a successful fruit and vegetable business from a van outside his house for many years.
He passed away in Our Lady Of Lourdes hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral arrangements are as follows.

|Peacefull,y at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Sadly missed by his brothers Harry, Ray and Gerry, sisters Doris, Rita, Ann and Philomena, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Bertie’s cortège will leave Watters’ Funeral Home, Collon, Monday at 10.30am to arrive at The Church of St. Patrick, Slane, for Private Funeral Mass at 11am. Burial afterwards in The Hill of Slane (limit of 10 people in the church). There will be an opportunity for the community to support Bertie’s family by being present, socially distanced, en route to the Church and the Hill of Slane.
