Tonight’s RTE documentary, Gunplot, will take a look at the well known story of the 1970 Arms Crisis which saw government ministers, Charlie Haughey, Kevin Boland and Neil Blaney dismissed from their posts by Taoiseach Jack Lynch amid allegations of attempts to import arms for use by the IRA in Northern Ireland.
The plot was uncovered by the Special Branch which at the time had as its head Chief Superintendent John P Fleming who was the man charged with arresting Haughey.
A Mayo man, Fleming had strong Meath connections, he was married to Peggy McCarthy from Keenogue in Duleek, McCarthy was the daughter of Pat McCarthy and Katie Callaghan who was originally from Rosnaree, and sister of well known course bookmaker, Patsy McCarthy.
Fleming also had links to former Slane based Garda Cyril Maguire with whom he won national handball doubles titles.
