The Justice Minister, Helene McEntee has given birth to a healthy baby boy. The new baby weighed in at 7lb 70z. McEntee is the first TD to be pregnant while in office and the first to go on maternity leave.

On her last day in office on the 27th of April  she stated “It is really important that women see other women in roles and positions being able to take maternity leave, being able to return to their jobs and return to the positions they were working in before”. McEntee took her leave on the 28th of April which will last 6 months, and gave birth the same night at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

McEntee also stated that the government is prepared to act quickly if a referendum is required to enable politicians to take maternity leave. Citizens Assembly has been asked to make a recommendation, expected in June.

The Meath East TD will remain a member of the government while on paid leave, assigned as a “minister without portfolio” or any duties. For the time being, Heather Humphries will be the Justice Minister.

McEntee hopes to return on the 1st of November when she will be reappointed as Justice Minister.

Congratulations and best wishes from all at Meath Live  to Helen and her husband Paul Hickey on their new bundle of joy
