The foolishness of the harshly applied Covid restrictions showed up when Drogheda slammed seven past Waterford United in this Premier division clash last Friday.
As two of the Suirsiders senior squad were deemed to be close contacts of a Covid case they were forced to play their under 19 squad in the match and as that side hadn’t played a game since last December they were always going to be up against it. .
The opening goal was the result of a quick reaction from Darragh Markey, which saw him pounce onto a loose ball and fire it into the roof of the net.
Mark Doyle turned in a corner from Hyland which made it 2-0 after 25 minutes. From the restart, Drogheda won back the ball and set up Dane Massey, who made it 3-0 from close range.
In the closing moments of the first half, Chris Lyons scored twice. The first saw the forward turn in a cross from James Brown and the second was from a penalty.
The winners clearly took their foot off the pedal in the second period and added just another two goals
. Dane Massey nabbed his second with a first time strike and then after a scramble following a corner Killian Philips turned in the final goal.
