An East Meath man has been found guilty of the possession of a sub machine gun that dates back to the end of WW II
Stephen Gibbons, (57), from Gormanston, was convicted after a four day hearing at Trim Circuit Court this week.
He was cleared of a charge of possessing 12 rounds of ammunition for the 76 year old weapon that expert testimony dated as being from 1945!
The Garda expert did however say the weapon was usable but that he could find no evidence it had been used recently.
Judge Martina Baxter was told that a hair discovered on the weapon was linked to the defendant,
The court heard a hair on the weapon was linked to the defendant..
Gibbons was remanded in custody for sentencing later this month.
