Two Navan postmen are set to make a very special delivery of hard earned, and it will be hard earned, cash to the fund raising efforts for a young child who has been diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer.

Nahyan Javed, who is just five years old, was diagnosed with metastatic neuroblastoma (NB) – a very rare and aggressive form of the disease – in May of last year and Denis Friel, who lives just across the road, from the Javeds, in Blackcastle Lodge has decided to get on his bike to help out.

He told Meath Live, ‘I am a postman and I roped in work colleague Dwayne Cassidy, who delivers to Nahyan’s house to do a sponsored cycle with me.’

This won’t be a doddle though as far from using the streamlined racing bikes that most would do the dynamic duo will cycle the 67 kms from Cavan post office to Navan post office on the old style bikes that postmen used to deliver on.

And Friel admits that even though they are racking up the miles in training it is far from easy.

‘We are up to 26 miles daily now, we either head out around Slane way or go towards Bohermeen and Kells, but the thing is the bikes we are using only have three gears, most modern racing bikes have nineteen or twenty.

‘It is tough at times but what gets us through it when we are struggling up hills is the thought that however hard we are having it Nahyan is having an even tougher time.

‘We are facing a challenge but he is facing a massive challenge, it’s the least we can do to help, and I have to say An Post have rowed in behind it 100% they are even supplying vans to escort us all the way down.
