The death has taken place of a long serving county councillor and former chairman of Meath County council, Jimmy Cudden from Duleek.
Initially elected as a Labour party candidate in 1979 Cudden completed 35 years on the council, many of them as an Independent.
His close friend and long time council colleague, Brian Fitzgerald, told Meath Live, ‘ It speaks volumes for what the people of, what was then, the Slane electoral area thought of Jimmy that despite facing all sorts of competition from big political parties he never lost an election, and regularly topped the poll.
‘ He pulled in votes from everywhere and for a very simple reason people liked him and also there was the fact that he would help anyone and never be concerned what their political affiliations were.
‘ Jimmy was very honest open and indeed frank with everyone if he could do something for them he did it and just as importantly if he wasn’t able to get something done he said so straight up and people appreciated that honesty.
‘I think history will look kindly on him as one of our greatest ever public representatives.’
