Minister of State for European Affairs and Meath East TD, Thomas Byrne has blasted remarks made by Tipperary rural TD, Mattie McGrath, which compared being asked about his vaccination status to “Nazi Germany” and claimed that it is “my body, my choice”. McGrath opposes the EU Covid19 digital certs that will be used to have access to indoor dining here.
Byrne condemned McGrath’s comments in a tweet: “Nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to Nazi Germany. Every comparison made diminishes the memory of that unique evil, and the slaughter of millions of Jews. We must continue to remember the absolute horror and terror of the Holocaust to ensure it can never happen again”.
Not only did Byrne condemn the insensitive comments, but the Auschwitz Memorial Museum in Poland also received words of McGrath’s remarks and invited him to a seven-chapter online course about the history of the Holocaust.
They followed up with a tweet: “Instrumentalization of the tragedy of all people who between 1933-45 suffered, were humiliated, tortured & murdered by the hateful totalitarian regime of Nazi Germany to argue against vaccination that saves human lives is a sad symptom of moral and intellectual decline”.
