A major water outage affected residents in Ashbourne, Ratoath and the surrounding areas yesterday evening.

Several businesses were forced to close their doors early as a result.

In an update posted on its website on Saturday evening, Irish Water said: “Water supply to the reservoirs supplying the Ashbourne and Ratoath areas in Co. Meath has reduced.

“As a result, water storage levels have run critically low, and some customers in Ratoath and Ashbourne and surrounding areas are currently experiencing water supply disruption.

“The cause of this issue is currently being investigated. A further update will be provided as soon as we know more.”

It’s believed the outage has been caused by demand exceeding supply.

It appears that an increase in supply from the reservoir, at Staleen, Donore, kicked in on Sunday morning.
