Derry win 4-2 on penalties

A visibly angry Drodgheda assistant manager Kevin Doherty described the performance of referee Paul McLaughlin as ‘scandalous’ after the official sent off Dane Massey, James Brown, and even manager Tim Clancy in this cup clash at Head In The Game Park.

And while Massey’s dismissal for handling the ball on the line, which led to Derry’s Junior hitting the post from a penalty, looked harsh, it was McLaughlin’s decision to send Brown off that really upset Drogheda.

The midfielder was clearly fouled in the penalty area but the ref decided he had dived and issued a second yellow card.

The home team led from a Dinny Corcoran goal just before the interval but from a second Derry penalty five minutes into injury time was converted by Daniel Lafferty.

In the shoot out James Clarke and Killian Phillips missed for the home team as Evan McLaughlin slotted in the winning kick.
