At today’s meeting of Meath County Council, councillors discussed the Chief Executive Report. Fine Gael Councillor, Alan Tobin, speaking on the report brought up issues in housing, especially in the Ashbourne area.

Tobin claimed that rentals in Ashbourne, “are at a premium”. He said that people in Dublin, especially from Fingal and the Dun Laoighaire/ Rathdown council area are coming to Meath and claiming housing with some using the HAP system.

Tobin stated that this is problematic as it is increasing the rent and taking away places from individuals who have lived their whole life in the Meath area and it’s going to Dubliners. He pleaded with the council to ask the Dublin authority to stop sending Dubliners here, if possible.

Barry Lynch of Meath County Council told Tobin that he is aware of Dubliners being sent to Meath, but that with HAP you are allowed to move freely and to areas close to Dublin, which includes Meath. He said that he well relay Tobin’s comments on this issue.
