The first football championship semi final of the weekend throws in tonight when one of the Saints will go marching out after St Vincent’s face St Ultan’s  in the JFC.

Both sides have different reasons for wanting to claim ultimate honours this season, the Ardcath based Vincent’s have been knocking on the JFC door for a few seasons and it could well be a case of now or never for the men in maroon.

Ultan’s on the other hand are in their first, and what they hope will be their only, season down from the intermediate ranks.

In Aussie Rules player Cian McBride the Bohermeen side has the grades stand out player, something countered by the Vincent’s having Nigel Hand the grades stand out scorer.

In their group games Ultan’s racked up big scores against Moynalty and Slane, although against the former most of their tally came late on when Moynalty heads had dropped, and in their first game against Dunsany they were walloped, admittedly McBride did not feature in that clash.

They are not a one-man band though, but unfortunately for them, their Achilles heel lies at precisely the point where Vincent’s are strongest, the Ultan’s full-back line is poor while Vincent’s full-forward line isn’t.

That’s taken to be a decisive enough advantage to see the Vincent’s make the decider.
