A proposal by Fine Gael councillor, Sharon Tolan, to make the temporary ban on cars parking on the Bettystown and Laytown beaches permanent was passed with overwhelming support at today’s council meeting.

Tolan told the meeting that she is regularly stopped by elderly people who congratulate her on the success of the ban and suggested that the footfall from people forced to walk to the strand is benefitting local businesses.

She also made the point that 500 extra parking spaces had been provided to accommodate cars and that today there would be over 2000 people attending Laytown races all of whom would be facilitated.

Fianna Fáils Stephen McKee argued strongly that the alternative parking arrangements in place have not worked, and Tolan’s FG party colleague Paddy Meade argued against it.

However the motion was passed by 27 votes to 3.
