Niall Collins the Minister Of State at the Department of the Environment has revealed that while the situation at Tara Mines is being ‘closely monitored’, he cannot say when the plant will reopen.

In response to a question from Sinn Féin TD for Meath West, Johnny Guirke, he said, ‘The department is actively monitoring the situation and is liaising with the Environmental Protection Agency and Meath County Council.

‘The Science Regulation Office visited the Tara site earlier this week and an engagement is  ongoing between the Regulators and Boliden the mine owners, it is not possible to say at this stage when the mine will become operational again.’

Meath Live understands that the situation which arose when water began to gush in as a result of the drilling of a pilot borehole for a 1km ventilation shaft,  and which brought a halt to production at the site in Navan since last week is still ongoing.
