Cllr Sharon Tolan (Fine Gael) has warned swimmers that the bathing water quality is “not tested all year round” and that “information regarding the quality/safety of our bathing waters is only monitored from June to mid-September”.

This warning comes after the heavy rain as a result of Storm Barra. Tolan claims that it is best to avoid recreational water activities at the beach for at least 48 hours.

Tolan’s advice to reduce the risk of illness are as follows: 1) avoid swallowing or splashing water, 2) wash your hands before handling food, 3) avoid swimming with an open cut or wound, 4) avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.
