KILMAINHAM EDGE IT AGAINST BALLINLOUGH
Kilmainham travelled to a sunny but cold Ballinlough to take on the hosts in the first round of the 2022 League.
Mickey Newman opened the scoring in the 3rd minute after great work in the Kilmainham defence to force a turn over.
Both sides traded points and stayed with each other. Newman added a brace of frees and very well taken point from play after some great running from full-back Paul Farrelly. The last quarter of the half the ‘Lough took over and scored 6 points without reply before Conor Kilgallen brought 4 back between the sides with the half just about up. The hosts went in with a 5 point lead at halftime, 0-05 to 0-10.
The second half started as the first and Kilmainham were on the scoreboard in the 3rd minute as Declan Mullen kicked his first of 4 over the next 10 mins to start the comeback. Mullen certainly bright his shooting boots to the Ballinlough, which each of his scores being better than the last. By the halfway mark the teams were level and it looked like it was there for taken for either team. Mickey found his younger brother Mark on the right-wing. There were many calls for the mark to be taken but Mark let the ball bounce and he was gone. Off his right and at a difficult angle, he let the ball fly and it hit the top left-hand corner of the net giving his team the breathing space it needed. The ‘Lough didn’t lie down and brought the deficit back to one with 2 points from play. One was questionable, as too many the ball looked to have gone wide but the umpire waved the white flag and the score stood. Luckily for KIlmainhan, a one-point win was in the bag and our League campaign was up and running.
Kilmainham will be happy with how they didn’t panic when the ‘Lough seemed to be going out of touching distance.
There was good performances across the park and we will look to build on today’s performance.
