Wolfe Tones 1-14

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-06

A bright, crisp day in Gibbstown saw Navan O’Mahony’s first A-League game since the onset of COVID-19. The conditions didn’t reflect the result for the town side and the experience of Wolfe Tones was enough to give them a comfortable victory.

The home side started well with a Cian Ward converted free, followed shortly afterwards by a 45. After 13 minutes, Wolfe Tones had racked up a five-point lead before wing forward Cathal Smyth settled things for Navan O’Mahony’s with a well-taken point.

Keeping the Kilberry-Gibbstown outfit scoreless for fourteen minutes, the second quarter was O’Mahony’s best period with further scores from play from Brian O’Hanlon and Jack McConnell. Wolfe Tones regained composure before the break, converting to frees to leave four points between the sides at the interval.

Half-Time Score: Navan O’Mahony’s 0-03 Wolfe Tones 0-07 While Wolfe Tones opened the scoring with a point from play, Navan O’Mahony’s reduced the deficit to three points with two frees, one by Aodhan Mallon and the other by O’Hanlon. The county champions responded well to this and kicked three points to double their lead. A goal from play half-way through the second half left a distance between the sides too large to bridge.

Wolfe Tones kept the scoreboard ticking over in the final quarter and a last-minute score by Shane McCarthy made little difference to the overall result.
