Laytown and Bettystown golfer Alex Maguire was yesterday crowned the East of Ireland Men’s Open champion, following a strong final day performance at the County Louth Golf Club in Baltray.
It’s the first time since 1981 years a member of the Laytown and Bettystown club has clinched the title.
With thirty-six holes to play on Monday, the twenty-one-year-old seemed out of contention but played his way into the reckoning with a seven-under-par 65 in his opening round of the day.
The Mornington native then followed this up in the afternoon by eagling the final hole to sign for a four-under-par round of 68, meaning that having carded 8 under he was left to sweat it out as clubhouse leader before claiming the crown
Maguire, who’s a student at the Florida Atlantic University, adds the East of Ireland title to the other Irish Amateur major accolades which he won last year; namely the Connacht Strokeplay at Portumna and the North of Ireland Championship at Royal Portrush.
