Fine Gael councillor Alan Tobin is due to make a public apology to fellow Ashbourne councillor, Joe Bonner, (Ind), at next Monday’s meeting of Meath County Council over remarks he made about Bonner at a previous Council meeting.
It is part of a settlement agreed between both men’s legal teams which will also see Tobin cover Bonner’s legal costs and make a donation to an Ashbourne based charity.
Tobin’s apology will be read out as part of the scheduled report from the council’s protocol committee despite a last ditch effort to shift it down the agenda to Any Other Business.
At a meeting of the Protocol Committee this afternoon, (Friday), FG councillor Gerry O’Connor suggested that AOB might be a more appropriate forum for the apology but the committee took the decision to include it during the period their monthly report is being discussed.
There is no suggestion that Tobin knew about the attempt to move it down the agenda.
One source told Meath Live, ‘ The idea was to have it read out in AOB which would commence late in the evening with few around to hear it, but the problem was it could have been construed as interfering with a legally binding agreement and nobody was prepared to do that.
