Donegal native, and Independent councillor in Meath, Joe Bonner, has told Meath Live of his shock at the devastating petrol station explosion that has left at least seven people dead close to his home area of Glenties.

He said, ‘What really got to me was the timing of it, at twenty past three in the afternoon that garage would have been serving Mums and kids on their way home from school which can only add to the tragedy.

‘I’d know Creeslough reasonably well, it is maybe a fifteen or twenty minute drive from my home place and it was and is a tight know local community.

‘It is located on the main road between Letterkenny and Dunfanaghy so there would be a fair bit of passing traffic as well all through the day.’

‘It is not a big place so everybody would know everybody and I would imagine the whole village would know someone who died or know relatives of those who were killed.

‘They are a resolute type of people who can face adversary but how can they be expected to cope with this ?, the scale of what has happened is unimaginable.

‘It should have been a weekend of celebration up there as a big car rally was taking place and instead it has turned into tragedy.

‘My heart goes out to them and I’d be certain that sentiment is echoed everywhere in the country.’
