Two-and-a-half million illegal cigarettes have been seized on the Dublin-Meath border, at The Ward just outside Ashbourne.

An intelligence-led operation by Revenue yesterday found the haul – with an estimated retail value of just under €2 million – at a commercial premises in the area.

The illicit cigarettes – branded ‘Manchester’ – were discovered in a consignment declared as ‘potato chips’ that had originated in Spain.

A man in his 50s was questioned by Revenue officers following the seizure.

Investigations are ongoing.
