Gardai are investigating the serious assault of a man in his 30s following an incident in Ashbourne, Co Meath on Thursday, as parents arrived to collect children from a nearby school.

 

Horrified parents and young children witnessed the vicious assault and video footage has emerged of the injured party being attended to at the scene.

 

The attack is connected to a schoolyard scrap between two second year students at Ashbourne Community school the previous day.

 

Sources told sundayworld.com ‘ This man was sitting in a jeep in the Centra car park facing St Declans primary school when two blokes in balaclavas and carrying what looked like axes arrived and started smashing the vehicle to pieces.

 

‘The word here is that the guy had a connection to somebody involved in a fight in the secondary school the previous day.

 

‘The guy in the car got out and tried to run but he was definitely struck a fair few times.

 

‘It was a terrifying few moments for the small kids and their parents,’

 

The day before the attack Gardai were called to a fight between two pupils in Ashbourne Community school the previous day, in which teachers were attacked when they tried to intervene.

 

A Garda spokesperson said, ‘ Shortly after 3pm, on Thursday 10/11/2022, a man was approached and assaulted by two males, understood to be armed with hatchets, while sitting in a parked vehicle at a car park in the Garden City area of Ashbourne.

 

‘He was taken by Ambulance to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment. His injures are not described as life threatening.

 

‘His assailants fled the scene prior to the arrival of Gardaí.

 

‘Gardaí are appealing to anyone witnessed this incident or with camera footage from the scene to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ashbourne Garda Station 01 8010600 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.’
