Meath West TD Peadar Toíbin has described the fact the Aontú party that he founded four years ago has maintained its place in the overall rankings in the latest Sunday Independent opinion poll as ‘extraordinary’.

Aontú is in fifth place in the party support ratings behind the big three of Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and just one percentage point behind the Social Democrats.

They are ahead of government party The Greens and Labour.

Toíbin told Meath Live, ‘Remember we have no government funding as we have just the one TD we have less speaking time because of that and yet we are ahead of the likes of People Before Profit, Labour and the Green Party who are currently in government.

‘When the party was founded a lot of people said there was no room for another political party in Ireland, I’d like to think we  have proved the doubters wrong and that’s been an extraordinary achievement.’
