Meath’s Keane Barry was an unbackable 1/20 favourite to win his first round match in the PDC Worlds darts championship but the Duleek darter was stunned by South African Grant Sampson going down to  3 sets to 1 defeat

In what was the first upset of this year’s tournament.

However, it was a memorable debut on the biggest stage for Sampson, who won 3-1 on his Ally Pally bow.

Sampson only got to the tournament after a Go Fund Me page was set up to help him and who travelled by bus to the venue admitted afterwards to being shocked by his success.

‘Playing in front of 3000 people was incredible we normally play in front of 30 back home, I caught the W3 bus from my hotel to come here and now I have to catch it again.

‘It’s the biggest night of my life I won’t be able to sleep tonight.’
