A soldier, who assaulted a taxi driver with a poker, has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Daniel Keane of Seagrave Park, Ratoath had pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, the production of an article and making off without paying for a taxi in Crumlin on December 7th,019.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court prhad heard that the 36-year-old defendant struck the taxi man with a black fire poker a number of times on the night in question.

Judge Orla Crowe served his country at home and abroad for 16 years and had no previous convictions.

However, the judge said people taking taxis at night should know that they cannot offer “an IOU” and handed down an 18-month sentence, suspended in full for two years on strict conditions.
