Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will discuss his role in the Good Friday Agreement at what appears to be a private and select gathering of Fianna Fáil members in Slanes Conyngham Arms hotel later tonight.

Sources have told Meath Live that Ahern’s visit was being deliberately kept low key.

One revealed, ‘Some of the top table at the Meath East Comhairle Dáil Cheantair didn’t even know this was on until it was all arranged and it would be fair to say some noses have been put out of joint.

‘In some ways it is a shame the event hasn’t been advertised as being open to the public because Bertie is a very good public speaker with a fund of stories to tell and it should be an interesting night especially as he was front and centre in establishing the agreement which led to the peace process, it probably would have packed the place out.’
