Trim councillor Noel French is on the verge of quitting Fine Gael and contesting the next local elections as an Independent candidate,
Gerry O’Connor the chief whip for Fine Gael councillors admitted to Meath Live that French was considering his options.
He told us, ‘It would be wrong to say he has quit but correct to say we are in discussion with him about remaining in the party, there has been a lot of talking done and we are hopeful of a positive outcome to the discussions.’
O’Connor also confirmed that the party are considering a change in the chief whip position he has held for a number of years, saying, ‘That is something that is being considered yes that is accurate.’
French got the highest individual vote of any councillor in the last elections back in 2019 when he took 2,954 first preferences.
Sources have told us, ‘Noel sees the writing on the wall for Fine Gael next time around and feels he would be better served standing as an Independent.’
When contacted Noel French was unable to comment but assured Meath Live he would be in touch.
