Navan Rugby Club is to twin  with Italian Rugby Club Piacenza 

located the north east of Italy.

The partnership arrangement will formally come in to being this Sunday, September 3 rd .
The relationship has come about as a result of the twinning between the then Navan Town
Council and the nearby town of Bobbio which was established in 2003.

According to Navan Rugby Club PRO Craig Williamson, “It’s going to give an opportunity
for the club to interact with another club in another country.
“We hope we can learn from them in the same way they can learn from us.
“Hopefully, opportunities will Navan.

President Scott Ennis along with other members of the Club Executive Committee will host
the visitors in the clubhouse for the formal launch of the partnership.
Following a friendly match organised by one of the senior adult teams, the game will be
followed by dinner in The Central restaurant on Trimgate Street before a Trad music session
in Berminghams Bar on Ludlow Street in the town.

According to Craig, “The new relationship with Navan and Bobbio will be a great
opportunity to develop sporting and cultural links.

“We intend to send a delegation over to Italy in and around away matches in the 6 Nations.”
As it stands, Meath has close relations with the Bobbio and Piacenza areas.
St. Columbanus who was born in Meath is buried in at Bobbio Abbey and the St. Columban
Fathers at Dalgan Park work closely with people in the area.

 

Navan is not the only town in the north-east area with connections to Italy. Drogheda is
twinned with Bronte in Sicily and Ardee has a relationship with the town of Nettuno south of
Rome.

“This is just the start of a developing relationship with Piacenza,” said Craig Williamson.
“One option is for Piacenza to play other clubs as well from the north-east when they visit
here.
“We’re really looking forward to this new beginning,” he said.
