The Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Tommy Reilly, has described a new policy for housing students as a kite flying exercise.

The proposal will see Council tenants earn €14,000 tax-free per year for renting out a room in their house to students.

The Government says it will review the initiative in a year’s time and it may be expanded to all renters and not just students.

Speaking on the Michael Reade show this morning the FF man said that as of close of business on Tuesday the council were not informed or given any details of the proposal in advance of it being announced.
