In what was a little known pact between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil Ashbourne Municipal district is to have a new Catharoirleach as an agreement was reached that saw FG man Alan Tobin take the chair for the first six months with the role then reverting to FF  comcillor Conor Tormey.

Last June Tormey was due to contest the chair against Independent Joe Bonner but was unable to attend the meeting at which the vote was taken due to illness, the rules apparently state a councillor has to be in the chamber for a votethey are contesting.

Multiple sources have told Meath Live that the deal between the government partys was kept very low key, and that Tormey cast his vote for Tobin via Zoom.

An email sent to all Ashbourne MD councillors earlier this week confirmed the swap when it announced Tobin was stepping down.

One source revealed, ‘Normally when such a deal was done it would leak out somewhere but this one didn’t and of course there is the fact tobe considered that the Catharoirleach is paid €6000 in addition to normal councillor payments which the two men will divide between them,’

Alan Tobin has not replied to a request for comment.

Joe Bonner said, ‘ I can confirm I contested the position, I will make no further comment’.
