Speaking to Meath Live, earlier today, Aontú Councillor Emer Toibín said,

“The result sends a strong message that the vast majority of the public rejected what the Government

was trying to do and the way that they were trying to do it.

“It was a clear message that you cannot ask people to answer questions without clear language ,

without the implications of those very articles [and] what they would have on society,

it strongly said that people need to be asked clear questions when dealing with the Constitution.”

Questioned if the referendums rejection was a protest vote, she added,

“I’d say there was a parallel protest vote there as well .

“People had issues [with] how carers were going to be treated going forward,

the removal of the word ‘Mother’ from the Constitution in total was a very serious issue,

the removal of the word ‘Woman’ from this particular article was also of serious concern but there

would be a cohort within the electorate that would be extremely disappointed with the direction

this Government is taking the country in and they wanted to make their voices heard.”
