Maria Uí Ruairc has been selected to contest the Local Elections for Sinn Féin, joining sitting councillor Helen Meyer on the ticket for the Ashbourne Electoral Area.
Bean Uí Ruairc served as a County Councillor for the Ratoath Electoral Area from 2014-2019. From Skryne, she is a secondary school teacher and mother of three. She is married to Sinn Féin TD for Meath East, Darren O’Rourke.
Speaking after a recent selection convention, Bean Uí Ruairc said;
“I am grateful to the Thomas Ashe Cumann, the Meath Comhairle Ceantair and the local membership for their support.
“I am looking forward to the campaign ahead. I know the challenges local communities face and the need for change. Addressing the housing crisis, at local and national level is Sinn Féin’s number one priority. There are a lot of other areas that need immediate attention and for which the Local Authority has an important role.
“As a teacher and a mother, I think is essential that our children can get to and from school safely. This will be a priority for me. For far too long we have seen local school communities struggle with Meath County Council to have basic traffic calming measures introduced. This needs to change and I am eager to make that happen. There should be a standard approach in these situations, for example. Why isn’t there?
“Likewise, the condition of roads in the area more generally, and the slow rollout of 21st century broadband infrastructure and public transport services are a source of huge frustration for people. These should be a given in a wealthy country like Ireland. That they are not is an indictment on our local and national government. It’s time for change. I aim, along with Cllr. Helen Meyer, to give people the opportunity to vote for change in the Ashbourne Electoral Area in the Local Elections in June.”
