There has been an outbreak of violence today at Coolock which was once the location of Crown Paints. It is understood that as work was to commence to get the site up and running, to provide accommodation for International Refugees for up 500 people, disturbances broke out.
Fires were started and missiles were thrown at gardaí and fire service personnel. There have been a number of arrests, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has said this type of action will not be tolerated and the actions will face the full rigours of the law.
The Garda Public Order Unit has been deployed, and incapacitant spray has been used.
This comes at a time where local residents near Thornton Hall have set up a vigilance at the site of the proposed jail that was to be built some twenty years ago but still has not been developed. Late last month the site saw acts of butchery. A number of pigs had their throats slit to spill blood on the lands, in the hope it would stop International Asylum applicants coming onto the unclean land. It is understood there are plans to accommodate up to 1000 people.
A man in his 30’s will appear before Swords District Court tomorrow Tuesday, 16th July 2024. The issue of housing International Applicants continues to fuel
hostility and hatred among elements of society throughout the country. The Department of Integration contends that all community leaders, local and national
public representatives are being fully informed, however, local politicians, Meath Live, has spoken to would disagree. In fact at this months Meath County Council
monthly meeting it was requested the Meath County Council would write to the department to seek a meeting for full clarification as to what the exact plans in place for Thornton Hall.
