Even the fact that brown water is coming from the taps of people’s homes in Canterbrook in Navan is not enough to stir Irish Water into action.
That’s according to Aontú Cllr Emer Tóibín who says that despite contacting the company three weeks ago, and it is opening an inquiry into the issue, there is still ‘radio silence’ from them, a situation she describes as “incredibly lax”.
Cllr Tóibín says “To say this is a completely inadequate response from Irish Water is an understatement. This is a semi state company, and it is leaving residents completely in the dark. There is no explanation whatsoever from them regarding this putrid brown water, no advisory as to whether residents should stop or continue drinking the water, absolutely no direction from them whatsoever. I have sent in several reminders, and they have been completely ignored”.
“The situation if anything is worsening. A local resident contacted me yesterday (12th August) and explained how little black pebbles and stone particles are clearly coming from the tap. I phoned Irish Water but received no reaction from them. I phoned again and was kept on the phone for 13 minutes and asked to confirm the president’s address 3 times. This is utterly inefficient and slow.”
“I cannot understand how a company that benefits from state funding can show such incredible disregard for residents”.
“Nobody should be expected to drink brown water, and nobody should be expected to buy bottled water because of the horrible water coming from their taps. We are living through a serious cost of living crisis; things are hard enough for people.”
“I will continue to keep up the pressure on Irish Water in a bid to try and get some resolution to this wholly unacceptable situation.”
