Kieran Kehoe, Chief Executive of Meath County Council, has issued the following statement to advise that the council has made plans to deal with the forthcoming inclement weather due to hit Meath and the country. The plan also includes those that maybe sleeping rough that emergency accommodation has been provided. The team will continue to assess the situation as it develops.

“ I wish to advise you that Meath County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment team has met to prepare for the yellow snow and ice weather warning this weekend and a prolonged period of cold weather for the forthcoming week. Met Eireann forecasts can be viewed at https://www.met.ie/ and it would appear that snow may impact the West of the County on Sunday.

The Council has sufficient levels of salt to ensure that designated routes are gritted. Meath County Council salts 795km of roads across 11 routes in the county each time icy roads are predicted. All National Primary (Priority 1), all National Secondary (Priority 1) and all Regional Routes (Priority 2) are salted. Approximately 22% (by length) of all roads in the county are treated. The M1 (Dublin – Belfast), M2 (Ashbourne By-Pass) and M3 (Clonee – Kells) are treated by private entities. You can view the gritting routes on our website at https://bit.ly/MeathWinterGrittingRoutes. In addition, snow ploughs have been attached to the gritting trucks to clear any snow accumulation if necessary. Arrangements are being made to provide salt to the community at the usual strategic locations across the County.

We have contacted those rough sleepers that we were aware of, and they are currently in emergency accommodation to protect them from the severe cold weather event. Our outdoor crews will be working over the weekend in preparation for the severe weather. Our Fire Services and Civil Defence crews are also on standby should their assistance be requested.

We would appreciate it if you would share the Council’s social media messages as well as the following link to the website https://www.meath.ie/council/news/met-eireann-status-yellow-snow-ice-warning-for-leinster.

Meath County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team will continue to meet over the weekend, and I will keep you informed as the situation develops.”
