A new application has been submitted to have a building in Kells classified as an exempted development under planning laws as a centre for international protection applicants. Meath County Council had previously ruled that the industrial unit in Kells Business Park was not classified as an exempted development and would need planning permission if the intention is to use it as residential development. That decision was made last month.
However, the owners have now submitted a new proposal for exempted development, as confirmed by the county council. The council said that an application for a declaration of exempted development under Section 5 of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2023 has been received by it on 28th February. A council statement said that the proposal relates to temporary use by or on behalf of the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth to accommodate or support displaced person or
persons seeking international protection.
A decision on the application is due to be made by the council later this month.
