Concerns over the funding for the Pathfinder R161 NAVAN TO Trim Cycle Scheme were expressed at a Meath County Council meeting by Independent Cllr Noel French. Plans and drawings for the non-statutory public consultation for the scheme were put on view last Autumn. The Pathfinder project would see 11kms of rural cycleway between the two towns and is designed to improve connectivity as well as improve safety for road users.

However, speaking during a debate on the county council management report Cllr French, pictured above, said the money for the scheme seems to have “disappeared”. He said he didn’t know where it had gone. “These things really do concern us. We thought the money was coming and all of a sudden it goes whoosh”. If the scheme did not go ahead there would be a waste of time in getting people out of their cars. The scheme would have made a  difference to climate change and would make a huge contribution towards developing tourism in the county.

It was to be hoped that it would link into the Boyne Greenway between Navan and Drogheda and Navan-Kingscourt Greenway. “I am really disappointed and concerned at this. There are smaller schemes within Trim at Newtown and Dunderry Road.”
