THE former principal of Donacarney Girls National School and Dame of the Order of St Sylvester has passed away peacefully at the Mater Hospital in Dublin. The news of her death on Tuesday 5 March, was met with sadness when it was announced at the ordinary meeting of the Laytown/Bettystown Municipal District meeting, which took place on 6 March. Speaking of an innovative career in education that spanned nearly 40 years in which 20 were as principal of Donacarney NS.

Councillor Paddy Meade (Fine Gael), Cathaoirleach (Chairperson) of Laytown/Bettystown MD remembered Ms Weir for a life dedicated to the community that far exceeded her professional role: “Brigid Weir was Principal for 20 years. She worked in the school for a lot longer than that. She was very successful in her campaigns, and 0issues from around Donacarney and East Meath and all the way up to local issues.”

Ms Weir was knighted by Bishop of Meath, the Most Reverend Tom Deenihan on behalf of Pope Francis for her active involvement in the life of the Catholic Church, particularly for her professional duties and community participation. The Papal Award ceremony which included her investiture as a Dame in the Order of St Sylvester took place in Mornington Parish Church in October 2023 with many of her family in attendance.

Remembered for her kindness and tireless work of more than 50 years on behalf of her community, Brigid Weir will be greatly missed and leaves behind a legacy of service to the church, the schools and the wider community. Reposing at Mornington Church Parish Rooms on Friday afternoon, 7th  March from 2pm to 6pm, her removal to the adjoining Star of the Sea Church will take place at 7pm.

The Funeral Mass for Brigid Weir will take place on Saturday 8th March at 11am at the Star of the Sea Church in Mornington, and burial afterwards will be held in Mornington Cemetery.
