A 45-year-old intoxicated woman who was being arrested during an incident in Ashbourne spat at two Gardai and punched another on the nose, Trim District Court has heard. Edel Sterling with an address at Camden Street Lower, Dublin appeared on a charge of assault causing harm at Ashbourne Garda Station on 16th November 2022.

Sergeant Brady told the court that defendant was in an intoxicated state and assaulted two people who were waiting at a bus stop. She was said to have been an aggressive mood and resisted vigorously when Gardai went to arrest her. She spat on them and two more Gardai had to be called to get her into the Garda station where she then punched a Garda on the nose. She also told them that she had hepatitis C.
She was said to have 66 previous convictions. Defending barrister James O’Brien told the court that his client had had difficulties with alcohol. She had undergone treatment but then had a relapse. The mother of two children aged 21 and 15, she had been the victim of a “very serious assault” two years ago.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan said the assault on Gardai was a very serious matter. She imposed a four-month prison sentence, which is to be consecutive to a prison term the defendant is already serving.
